Stranger Things

The final season of Stranger Things brought global attention to Iceland when a key closing scene was filmed at Háifoss and Granni waterfalls in Þjórsárdalur, South Iceland. In the series, the dramatic landscape represents “a beautiful land, somewhere far away,” as described by Mike Wheeler — a peaceful, otherworldly place where Eleven may find refuge.

Located near Hekla volcano, Háifoss plunges nearly 120 metres into a vast canyon, offering scale, isolation, and raw natural power that few locations can match. The surrounding highland terrain provided an authentic, cinematic setting that required no visual doubling — a hallmark of filming in Iceland.

Following the release of the final season, online searches for Stranger Things Iceland and Háifoss waterfall surged by thousands of percent, highlighting how major productions filmed in Iceland drive global awareness. The project once again demonstrates how Iceland’s landscapes don’t just support storytelling — they become part of it.
